Man Opens Formal Inquiry Into His Own Night Out, Findings Due By Brunch

By eight in the morning the full timeline was rebuilt, before anyone checked for a hangover or replied to a single message.

A phone at 8 a.m., mid-scroll, cross-referencing three chats against what he remembers.

A man began rebuilding at eight in the morning, before checking for a headache, water, or missed calls. He opened three group chats and lined up every timestamp. His memory lost the argument, immediately.

The message to the fiancée is logged as 'a material disclosure, delivered without authorisation.'

By nine, the wider group had opened its own inquiry. Nobody was asked to join, but someone was already taking minutes. Someone else had named the shared document "Findings (Final)." It was not final.

He volunteered to build the master timeline himself, before the document held a single finding. He said his memory for detail was excellent, and cited his job in insurance. The committee thanked him and gave him the job, since nobody else wanted it.

A chair was appointed by ten, and she had already chaired six of these this year. Her first rule was screenshots only, no summaries. Summaries, she said, are how people get away with it.

The first finding concerned a message sent at 1:47 a.m. He told his best friend's fiancée he had loved her since university. He said it twice, in writing, with a screenshot attached as proof. The group has classified this as "the incident."

The second finding was physical: he was sick into his own shoe outside the kebab shop. He put the shoe back on anyway and walked home in it. The report lists this under "unplanned discharge."

The findings use careful language throughout: the message to the fiancée is logged as "a material disclosure, delivered without authorisation." The shoe is filed as "a non-covered loss, self-inflicted." Both are marked resolved, pending an apology.

His section of the timeline came back with one gap. It covers the exact ten minutes of the message to the fiancée. He has called this "a battery issue," and the group has minuted it without comment.

The committee has scheduled a follow-up meeting for next Saturday, same time, same bar. This newspaper has been asked to attend as a neutral observer. We have already agreed, and already started a group chat about it.

Tomorrow’s Forecast

Work Drinks Season Arrives Nationwide, Forecast Calls For Regret By Thursday

Office calendars are filling with "quick ones" scheduled to end by nine, and rarely do. Expect at least one message sent to the wrong group chat, and at least one manager who insists this year will be "more chilled."

By Friday, several colleagues will insist they "don't really drink," shortly before being reminded, by photograph, that they do. Outlook: mostly regret, clearing by lunch, returning again by Christmas.

Classifieds

  • FOR SALE: One (1) traffic cone, acquired Saturday night, ownership disputed by four people who all insist it was someone else's idea.
  • WANTED: A designated note-taker for future nights out. Must own a laminator. Screenshot skills essential.
  • SERVICES: Alibi-writing, plain English translated into "corroborated by two witnesses." Same-day service, weekends extra.
  • LOST: Twenty minutes of Saturday night, last seen somewhere between the second bar and the taxi rank. Whoever finds them need not report back.

Corrections

  • An earlier edition described the group's process as "informal." It is not informal. Minutes exist. There is a font.
  • An earlier edition reported the shared document was called "Findings (Final)." It is now called "Findings (Final) (2)." Nothing about it is final.

Letters to the Editor

"Your paper reported that my testimony contained 'inconsistencies.' It did not. I simply remember the night in the order that suits me, which I believe is my right as the person who was there."

— Cleared, In My Own Opinion, 34

"Your paper described my gym attendance as a 'January spike.' I renew every year, in good faith, for reasons that have nothing to do with December."
