Man Relives Beach Holiday Three Weeks Before Paying For It, In That Order
The repost went up before the bank alert was even opened, and the caption did not change.
A phone lit up at 9:47 on Tuesday with two notifications, stacked. One was a bank alert, naming a four-figure sum from an August holiday, only now cleared. The other was a memory: a beach photo from three weeks back, asking to be shared again. He tapped share. He has not yet tapped the bank alert.
The transaction has been categorised as 'Discretionary — Recently Regretted.' No action is required.
The caption on the repost reads, "Can't stop thinking about this trip." Nobody asked what he meant by that.
The sum covers more than flights. It covers a round he bought for the whole table, on a card meant for the mortgage. He wet the bed on the last night. He told housekeeping, with total confidence, it was the minibar fridge. The hotel calls this an "incidental damage charge." It is €140, and he has not asked what for.
His bank sorts every purchase into a category automatically. This one has been filed under "Discretionary — Recently Regretted." The label came out of a trial this year. The bank calls the trial "listening to customers cry quietly into their statements."
The photo collected a modest number of likes within the hour. One came from a friend who took the same trip. She had reposted her own version of the same beach earlier that evening. Her balance had not cleared either. Neither of them has mentioned it.
A recorded message read the balance aloud, in the same voice used for suspected fraud. "We have noticed unusual activity," it said. "The activity is you, in August, at your happiest."
The bank has also confirmed a second charge, due in October, for a payment plan he does not remember choosing. It is called "Keep The Feeling." It renews every August, the same week the photos start again.
The caption was right. He really cannot stop thinking about this trip. Neither, it turns out, can his bank.
This newspaper sold the travel company its back-page advertisement for the same holiday, back in June. Our invoice came back filed under the same category as his: Discretionary — Recently Regretted. Nobody at this desk has cancelled it either.
