Family's Visit Home Talked Down To Four Hours, Guest Bed Never Used
The guest bed was made the better part of a week before the visit was confirmed, and used for none of it.
The guest bed was made on Tuesday. Fresh sheets, corners tucked, the better part of a week before any date was confirmed. It stayed made through Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Nobody used it this year, or last year, or the year before that.
For three years, the doorbell has logged every arrival and every departure. HR has less on him.
The visit began as most of a week, maybe more. By Wednesday it was a long weekend, because work had gone mad. By Thursday it was one night, driving down Saturday morning. By Friday it was an afternoon, back Sunday for something unspecified. By Saturday it was a window: 12:04 p.m. to 4:02 p.m.
The front door has a video doorbell. For three years it has logged every arrival and every departure, unasked. HR has less on him.
Part of the visit was spent on the childhood bathroom floor, being sick, fan running to cover it. A step-stool from childhood still sits beside the toilet. He had seen friends the night before, to make the trip worth it. He blames the drive.
The doorbell's app sent a notification an hour after he left. It was titled "Home Activity Insights." "Your visits are getting shorter," it read. "Here are some tips to increase engagement." Tip one was a video call.
This newspaper's back page has been sold to the doorbell company since March. We call it engagement.
