Family's WhatsApp Admin Rights Officially Entered Into Probate, Ranked Ahead Of The Good Sideboard

The chat has been formally valued. The sideboard has not recovered.

The group's header, photographed Thursday. "Mum's Birthday Planning 70th!!" is struck through. "Estate Admin" sits above it, now entered on the solicitor's inventory, ranked ahead of the sideboard.

A family's WhatsApp group was renamed "Estate Admin" two days after the funeral, while flowers were still arriving. It had been called "Mum's Birthday Planning 70th!!" since March. Nobody voted on the new name. Someone had admin rights, and used them.

So sorry for your loss. Also, does anyone actually want the sideboard?

The family's solicitor entered the chat into the estate the same week, between the furniture and the current account. Solicitors describe this as increasingly standard. The letter calls it "digital correspondence rights." Estimated value: nil. Retained anyway, for administration purposes.

One message arrived nine minutes after the first condolence, from the aunt who had just written "thinking of you." It read, in full: "So sorry for your loss. Also, does anyone actually want the sideboard?" She saw no difference between them. There wasn't one.

Her brother was sick in the downstairs toilet before the first hymn, three drinks in. He was still in his funeral suit. He came out doing up his belt and went straight to the sideboard with a tape measure.

A letter followed the next week, four pages long, in the calm tone solicitors keep for exactly this. It refers throughout to "the asset colloquially known to the family as the good sideboard." The chat gets a single line. The sideboard gets most of the letter.

A second chat appeared the same week, called "Estate Admin (Updated)." Her brother was not added. He still had admin rights on the first one, used it within the hour, and renamed it back. Neither sibling will say who started it.

The original chat's pinned message has not changed. It still reads: "No presents, just your presence!" Everyone currently active in the thread is asking about presents.

This newspaper ran the family's obituary last week, in the usual column, at the usual rate. It is running the sideboard as a classified this week, listed as "one careful owner, deceased."

We were also asked to list the chat. We don't carry adverts for group chats. We charged for the obituary and the sideboard anyway. Grief pays twice.

Tomorrow’s Forecast

Low-Grade National Guilt Expected To Continue Into The Weekend

Guilt will stay elevated nationwide, peaking Saturday night and clearing slightly by Monday's first coffee.

A cold front of unread work emails moves in from the north, expected to linger well into next week.

Outlook: One extra sweater. One avoidable phone call, still avoided.

Classifieds

  • FOR SALE: One (1) "good" sideboard, provenance disputed, now listed as "one careful owner, deceased." Viewing by appointment. Siblings not invited to the same appointment.
  • WANTED: One colleague willing to admit the "quick call" was never quick. Will accept a written confession, or just eye contact.
  • SERVICES: Confidence coaching for men growing a moustache for charity. First four days free. Results may vary, and have.
  • LOST: One unbeaten five-a-side run, somewhere near a goalkeeper's "late one." Reward offered, mainly to find out whose fault it was.

Corrections

  • An earlier edition described the family's estate dispute as "ongoing." It concluded Tuesday, when the sideboard was sold to a stranger for forty pounds. Nobody has told her brother.
  • We described a colleague's leaving drinks as "low-key." They were not. HR has asked that the phrase not be used again this quarter.

Letters to the Editor

"Your paper claims families start fighting over furniture before the flowers die. Mine started during the eulogy. I know, because I was giving it, and I paused to answer a message about the sideboard."

— Still The Executor, 47

"Your ticker reported my gym renewed its direct debit. My card was declined at the till today, twice, with a queue behind me. I have cancelled the gym. I have not found a way to cancel the queue."
