Man Named Investigator, Suspect And Witness In A Case File He Did Not Open

The evidence against him is entirely his own. The app reached a verdict before he woke up.

His phone, photographed Thursday morning, banking app open on one side and Find My on the other. Neither application asked if he was okay. Both have since been named as evidence.

A man on day two of Sober October woke up to a notification instead of a hangover. Overnight he had been named the investigator, the suspect and only witness in a case file opened on himself. He was given all three jobs, unpaid and unasked. He read the whole file before his eyes had properly focused.

Great effort — every attempt counts!

On October 1st he told the whole office. One message, one pledge: no drinking for the month. Colleagues sponsored him by the day, through a page that counts and pays out. His sobriety app confirmed the pledge in writing. It used the same tone later to open the case against him.

His bank app shows one charge, at 1:47 a.m., from a kebab shop a long way from his flat. Two large doners, one card, no explanation offered. Find My places him in a stranger's front garden at the same time, eating both. The case file logs the garden as Scene A.

A gap follows. Find My logs him standing behind a hedge, filed as "Scene B, cause unknown." The cause is known. He was sick into the hedge, lost a shoe doing it, and left both behind.

At 2:03 a.m. he left a voice note for the kebab shop's online order line. He apologised at volume for a mess he could not fully describe, and promised to "sort it financially." The kebab shop has not called back. The case file has transcribed the note in full and filed it as Exhibit C. Two colleagues have already replayed it, for fun.

His sober-day counter reset to zero by morning, the moment he logged the drink. Every sponsor on the page got a notification. The app's message was warm: "Great effort — every attempt counts!"

The case has since been referred to what the app calls Review, a function nobody sponsoring him knew existed. A notification confirmed the escalation and gave the case a number. It also named a moderator in a time zone nobody recognised. His manager replied in the thread with a thumbs up.

Someone offered to sponsor a second attempt, at double the rate. He is now, apparently, a known quantity. Exhibit C has since been forwarded to group chats he was never part of.

This newspaper sponsored him too, one pound a sober day, same page as everyone else. Our payment has also been referred to Review. We are still checking our bank app.

Tomorrow’s Forecast

National Mood Forecast: Scattered Guilt, Brief Window Of Delusion By Payday

A ridge of low-grade guilt will sit over most of the country until Thursday, peaking overnight for no specific reason. A narrow window of financial confidence opens near payday and closes again the moment the Sober October sponsorship charges go through.

Outlook: one abandoned to-do list, one gym bag moved from the car to the hallway and back again, and a small but steady rise in people searching how many sober days it takes to get their money back.

Classifieds

  • FOR SALE: One (1) unread book pile, slightly dusty, now doubling as a side table. Collection preferred, delivery not offered.
  • WANTED: Someone to define "minor delay" in actual minutes. Compensation not expected, an honest answer is.
  • SERVICES: Dog available for emotional support, household management, and quietly judging your shoes. Rates negotiable, treats mandatory.
  • LOST: One shoe, last seen behind a hedge with the rest of a kebab. Reward for the shoe. The dignity is not coming back and we are not looking for it.

Corrections

  • An earlier edition described the office printer as "jammed." It was not jammed. It was, according to IT, "making a decision."
  • An earlier edition said the Sober October app "offers encouragement." On review, its only recorded message is "Great effort — every attempt counts!" It has never once sent this for a day actually completed.

Letters to the Editor

"I sponsored a colleague five pounds a sober day for Sober October. He reset on day two. The page still asked me to pay, and called it 'early payment flexibility.' I have paid. I do not feel flexible."

— Five Pounds Lighter, Apparently Permanently

"Your paper reported that my dog is 'running the household.' This is incorrect. I make every final decision in this house. He simply reviews them first, from the sofa, and vetoes the ones he dislikes."
