No-Spend November Pledge Reclassified As "Day 30 Compliant," Four Days In
A pledge broken by day three has been upgraded, automatically, to a full month of perfect discipline.
She posts the pledge at nine in the morning, on November first. "No-Spend November, let's do this," with two confetti emojis. The rules are listed underneath: no coffee out, no takeout, no new clothes.
Nobody asks what the missing six points were for. They were the takeaway.
Her sister replies with a heart. Her mother replies with four hearts. She wrote the message herself, fresh, the way she always does.
By day three, she orders a takeaway in the work car park, alone, with the radio off. She eats it too fast, feels sick halfway through, and finishes it anyway. There is no bag left to find by the time she goes back inside.
That night she posts her bank balance, to prove she is doing well. The delivery charge from the takeaway is still on the screen, near the bottom, uncropped. Nobody in the chat mentions it. Nobody ever does.
Her banking app has a feature called Spending Wellness. It tracks pledges automatically, from the receipts alone. On day four, it sends her a push notification. It reads: "Day 30 of No-Spend November complete. Outstanding work." The app has not noticed the takeaway. It has only noticed the thirty.
She screenshots the notification and sends it straight back to the group. Her mother replies with four hearts, again. The app also gives her an Adherence Score, out of a hundred. Hers is ninety-four. Nobody asks what the missing six points were for. They were the takeaway.
The message was never written fresh. It lives as a note on her phone. The note is titled "No Spend Nov, just change the year." She has posted it, confetti and all, for three Novembers running. Only the year changes.
The app has given her a badge for this. It calls her a "Three-Year No-Spend Veteran." The badge does not ask whether any of the three years were completed. It only asks whether one was filed.
This newspaper made its own pledge in January, saved in a note titled the same way. We have not opened the note since March.
